How often do you look in the mirror and like what you see? Do you allow yourself to appreciate the reflection or scrutinise it with disapproval and criticism?

It is important to view your mind and body as two separate entities to stop the former taking the latter for granted. Our body is a faithful servant performing the formidable, unending task of warding off disease and transporting our cranial super-computer as we navigate through the challenges of day-to-day life. Rewarded, all too often, with very little thanks and fed hurried, carelessly selected scraps for nourishment.

So, what if we stand in front of that mirror again? This time, rather than looking for the lumps and bumps that only we really notice, we look, with compassion and appreciation, at the body reflected before us. We smile, acknowledging how much this impressive and beautiful machine does for us. For every ache and pain we might grumble about, millions of tasks are performed without our knowing. From our kidneys filtering our blood approximately 30 times over each day to our skin protecting us from foreign organisms and toxic substances we really are looking upon a glorious and unerring warrior.

The human form comes in all shapes and sizes and to criticise it for not outwardly conforming to an airbrushed version on a magazine cover is unfair and disloyal. Our bodies are far more, and deserve far more, than our subjective critique of them. Love your body as it loves you. It is waging a perpetual, silent battle to keep you safe and alive. Reward that loyalty with self-care and gratitude. Perhaps skip that bottle tonight, take a hot bath, avoid the shop-bought sandwich tomorrow, or simply set yourself up for a restful night’s sleep.

Be the benevolent master your faithful body deserves and do not rebuke it for merely the reflection it casts. Your body is truly magnificent. Be kind. Be appreciative. By embracing you in your glorious entirety, both your body and mind will return that faith and kindness with a renewed sense of calm and vitality.

Thank you for reading. Hopefully, this brought a smile to your face and a feeling of gratitude to your mind.
